Counting hardship as joy isn't the same as pretending it feels good, it's recognizing what the trial is producing underneath the discomfort. If this group is in a genuinely hard season right now, this verse doesn't ask for denial, it asks for a longer view of what the trial might be building. The word count is worth noticing, it's an act of the will, a deliberate accounting, not a spontaneous feeling, which means this kind of joy in hardship is something chosen, not something that simply arrives.
