A Short Devotion on Listening for Your Next Meeting
π James 1:19
βWherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.β
π Reflection
The order here is deliberate, hearing comes first, and both speaking and anger come after, slowed down. Most conflict in a room happens because people reversed the order, speaking or reacting before actually hearing what was said. This is a simple, practical instruction for any meeting with real disagreement in it. It's worth noticing how often what gets called disagreement in a meeting is actually two people responding to two different, half-heard versions of what the other person meant.
β In Practice
In today's discussion, practice waiting a full three seconds after someone finishes speaking before you respond, long enough to actually process it instead of just planning your reply while they talk. Three seconds feels awkward at first and gets easier with practice, and it changes the whole tenor of a heated discussion for the better.
π£ Discuss
Where might we need to listen longer today before we respond?
π Pray
Lord, make us quick to listen today and slow to speak or react. Help us actually hear each other before we respond, instead of just waiting politely for our own turn to talk. Amen.
