US Catholic Bishops Form Task Force on Artificial Intelligence and Human Dignity
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops announced on September 16 the formation of a task force dedicated to preserving human dignity amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence. San Jose Bishop Oscar Cantu will chair the group, which is meant to help identify how the Church can contribute to the moral foundation of AI systems. The announcement followed meetings between the bishops' conference and representatives from technology companies and AI researchers.
More than a dozen bishops also traveled to Capitol Hill to urge lawmakers to adopt meaningful safety guardrails for AI, including protections for children online. USCCB spokeswoman Chieko Noguchi said the effort is meant to keep AI systems at the service of humanity while addressing the real dangers the technology presents.
