Reformed Church in America Formally Condemns Christian Nationalism

Church Desk · why this matters for churches·June 2026

Delegates at the Reformed Church in America's 219th General Synod adopted a formal statement in June declaring Christian Nationalism “opposed to the gospel of Christ.” The statement, drafted by the denomination's General Synod Professorate, calls the ideology “a false church” that distorts the gospel by conflating national identity with God's reign. The RCA is a mainline denomination of fewer than 600 congregations.

The statement is part of a wider pattern of denominations issuing formal positions on Christian Nationalism in recent years, a sign the topic has moved from theological debate into official church business. The RCA's statement calls on Christians to pursue influence in public life through persuasion rather than coercion.
