Diocese Restricts Prominent Priest From Ministry Pending Misconduct Investigation
The Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts, announced on September 11 that it has restricted Monsignor Roger Landry from the public exercise of priestly ministry after receiving allegations from multiple individuals that he violated the codes of conduct for priests in the Diocese of Fall River and the Archdiocese of New York. The diocese said the allegations do not involve minors. Following an initial investigation by the Archdiocese of New York, where Landry's ministry had been based, the Diocese of Fall River determined that sufficient evidence exists to restrict him while the matter is resolved. Landry has requested a leave of absence from his post as national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States.
Landry, a nationally known Catholic writer and speaker, is entitled to the presumption of innocence while the investigation continues, the diocese said. He has said the allegations involve claims of violations of prudence and pastoral boundaries with adults, and that there are no allegations of sexual activity or misconduct with a minor. The diocese encouraged anyone with concerns to contact law enforcement or its Office of Safe Environment. No timeline has been announced for when the investigation will conclude.
