💭 What This Means
Today's reading shows us the tragic end of Samson, a judge called by God but undone by his own desires. He repeatedly fell for the Philistines' traps, finally revealing the secret of his strength to Delilah. Stripped of his power and blinded, he was mocked by his enemies. But in his final moments, God granted him strength for one last act of vengeance, bringing down the temple and killing more Philistines in his death than in his life. Then, the book shifts to a disturbing picture of Israel's spiritual decline. Micah steals from his mother, then she uses the money to make idols, while Micah hires a Levite to be his personal priest. This illustrates the chaotic state of the nation, where "every man did that which was right in his own eyes." The Danites then steal Micah's idols and priest, establishing their own corrupted worship. It's a dark portrayal of a people without a king, each doing what they pleased, leading to widespread spiritual confusion and moral decay.
