💭 What This Means
Today's reading takes us through two dramatic and often unsettling stories from the time of the Judges. We first meet Jephthah, chosen by God's Spirit to deliver Israel, but who makes a tragic and ill-advised vow to sacrifice the first thing that comes from his house if he wins. Sadly, his only daughter greets him, and he fulfills this devastating promise. This is followed by a brutal conflict with Ephraim, marked by the infamous 'Shibboleth' test. Then, we turn to the birth of Samson. After Israel again turns from God, an angel appears to a barren couple, Manoah and his wife, promising a Nazirite son who will begin to deliver them from the Philistines. We see God's power in Samson's incredible strength, slaying a lion, defeating a thousand men with a jawbone, and burning Philistine crops with foxes. Yet, Samson's personal life is a turbulent mix of impulsiveness and divine purpose, setting the stage for future conflict.

Lord, these stories are hard to read, full of human brokenness and chaotic events. Help us to be wise in our words and commitments, unlike Jephthah. Thank You that even in such dark times, You still raised up deliverers and worked to save Your people. Guide us by Your Spirit today, so we can live with integrity and trust Your perfect plan.
