💭 What This Means
Today's reading closes the book of Judges with one of the Bible's darkest accounts. It begins with a Levite and his concubine, but quickly descends into horror. After stopping in Gibeah, the men of the city commit an unspeakable act against the Levite's concubine, leading to her death. The Levite's shocking response, dismembering her body and sending it throughout Israel, serves as a gruesome call for justice. This triggers a civil war between the other tribes of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin, which protects the wicked men of Gibeah. Despite two initial defeats, Israel finally prevails with God's help, almost wiping out Benjamin entirely. Then, in a twisted effort to preserve the tribe, the Israelites orchestrate two more morally questionable acts: destroying Jabesh Gilead and allowing the remaining Benjamite men to kidnap wives from Shiloh. The book ends with the stark reminder that in those days, there was no king in Israel, and everyone did what was right in their own eyes. It's a tragic picture of a people lost without true leadership, highlighting humanity's capacity for evil when God's law is ignored.
