💭 What This Means
Today's reading continues the pattern in Judges: Israel does evil, suffers oppression, cries out, and God raises up a deliverer. We see Shamgar's unlikely victory with an ox goad. Then, Israel is oppressed by Sisera, leader of Jabin's army. God raises up Deborah, a prophetess and judge, and Barak, a military leader who needs Deborah's presence to go into battle. The victory is swift, and Sisera flees, only to be killed by Jael, a woman, in a shocking and decisive act. Chapter five is a song celebrating this victory, exalting God and Jael, and highlighting the courage of those who responded. Then, the cycle repeats with the Midianites oppressing Israel. God calls Gideon, a man threshing wheat in fear, and declares him a 'mighty man of valor.' Gideon is full of doubt and questions, asking for signs and proof. Yet, God patiently reassures him, consumes his offering with fire, and calls him to tear down his father's idol. Even in our weakness and questioning, God is faithful to his promises and works through us.

Lord, thank You for raising up deliverers for Your people, even when they doubted or were afraid. Thank You for Your patience with Gideon's questions and for working through unexpected people like Deborah and Jael. Help me to trust Your call on my life, even when I feel weak or unqualified. Strengthen my faith to obey You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
