💭 What This Means
Today we witness one of the most incredible stories of God's deliverance. Gideon's army of 32,000 is deemed too large by the Lord, so it's whittled down, first by fear, then by a unique drinking test, to a mere 300 men. God ensures that Israel cannot boast of saving themselves. With just trumpets, jars, and torches, this small band creates chaos, leading the vast Midianite army to turn on itself. Gideon then pursues the remaining kings, punishing those who refused to help. But the story takes a turn. Israel asks Gideon to rule, and though he says the Lord should rule, he creates an ephod that becomes a snare, leading Israel back to idolatry after his death. His son, Abimelech, then brutally murders his 70 brothers to seize power, a tragic illustration of human sin and the cycle of turning away from God.
🙏 Let's Pray
Lord, thank You for showing us today that Your power is made perfect in weakness. When our resources are small, or our challenges are great, remind us that You are more than enough. Help us to trust You fully, and to remember that You alone are King. Guard our hearts from turning away from You, as Israel so often did. In Jesus' name, Amen.
