💭 What This Means
Today we begin the book of Judges, a story of Israel's descent after Joshua's death. In chapter one, we see mixed results. Judah, with God's help, drives out many enemies, even though some tribes struggle against iron chariots. But a larger problem emerges: many tribes fail to completely drive out the inhabitants, instead settling among them or putting them to tribute. Chapter two reveals the tragic consequences. An angel of the Lord confronts Israel, reminding them of God's covenant and their disobedience. Because they did not destroy the altars of the land, God declares these remaining nations will become "thorns in their sides" and a "snare." The generation after Joshua dies, and a new one arises that "knew not the Lord." This sets the stage for a repeating cycle: Israel does evil, God delivers them to oppressors, they cry out, God raises a judge to deliver them, and then they fall back into sin after the judge dies. Chapters two and three introduce the first two judges, Othniel and Ehud, demonstrating God's continued faithfulness to His people, even when they are unfaithful. This pattern will define the entire book.

Lord, today we see a painful pattern emerge. How easily Your people forgot You and Your commands. Forgive us for the ways we compromise with the world around us, and for the times we forget Your goodness. Thank You that even when Your people failed, You still heard their cries and raised up deliverers. Help me to remember You and obey You fully today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
