💭 What This Means
Joshua 22 opens with a dramatic misunderstanding. The tribes who settled east of the Jordan built an altar, and the rest of Israel assumed it was rebellion against the Lord. But after a tense confrontation, it's revealed the altar was a witness, a physical reminder for future generations that they were one people, serving the same God. Then, as Joshua nears the end of his life, he gives two powerful farewell addresses. He reminds Israel of God's unwavering faithfulness, recounting their history from Abraham to the conquest. He challenges them to 'choose this day whom you will serve,' urging them to put away other gods and cleave only to the Lord. He warns them of the consequences if they turn away, but also reminds them of all God has done. His final act is to renew the covenant, setting up a stone as a witness to their promise.

Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness throughout history. Help me to resolve misunderstandings with grace, as the tribes did. Give me the courage to choose You every day, to serve You sincerely and truthfully, and to put away anything that draws my heart away from You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
