💭 What This Means
Today's reading reveals the dramatic consequence of impatience and the power of intercession. While Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the commandments, the people grew restless. They demanded Aaron make them gods, fashioning a golden calf and worshipping it. God's anger flared, ready to consume them, but Moses powerfully interceded, appealing to God's covenant promises. Descending the mountain, Moses' anger burned as he saw their idolatry, breaking the tablets and destroying the calf. He then returned to God, even offering his own life for their sin. God then declared He would not go with them, but Moses pleaded for God's presence, arguing that without it, they would not be set apart. Because Moses found favor, God agreed, revealing His glory and proclaiming His character as merciful, gracious, and forgiving. Moses then received new tablets with the covenant words, and his face shone so brightly from God's presence that he had to wear a veil.

Lord, we confess that like Israel, we often turn away when You seem distant. Thank You for Your mercy and grace, even when we fail. Thank You for not abandoning us, and for revealing Your character as merciful and forgiving. Help us to always seek Your presence, knowing that it is what sets us apart.
