💭 What This Means
Today's reading opens with one of the most foundational passages in the entire Bible: God delivering the Ten Commandments from Mount Sinai. With thunder, lightning, and a trumpet blast, God Himself speaks to His people. The Israelites are so overwhelmed by His presence that they beg Moses to be their go-between, fearing they would die if God continued to speak directly. God then gives specific instructions for how they are to worship Him, emphasizing that they are not to make idols of silver or gold. Following these foundational moral laws, chapters twenty-one and twenty-two detail practical civil laws for the new nation. These cover everything from the treatment of servants, to punishments for assault, restitution for theft, and compensation for damaged property or animals. It's clear that God is establishing a society founded on justice, fairness, and the protection of the vulnerable, demonstrating His care for every aspect of their lives.
