💭 What This Means
Paul is deeply concerned for the Corinthians, likening them to a bride he wants to present pure to Christ. He fears they might be led astray by false teachers and "another gospel," just as Eve was deceived. He defends his apostleship by recounting his immense sufferings for the gospel: beatings, shipwrecks, dangers, and constant care for the churches. He even describes escaping Damascus in a basket. He also shares about being caught up to the third heaven, but to keep him humble, God gave him a "thorn in the flesh." Paul prayed for its removal, but the Lord's answer was profound: "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." This leads Paul to embrace his weaknesses, knowing that in them, Christ's power rests upon him. He urges the Corinthians to examine themselves and live in peace, trusting God's power. The Acts passage adds a vivid story of Paul preaching so long that a young man named Eutychus falls from a window and dies, only for Paul to raise him back to life. This shows the power of God at work through Paul even amidst his "weakness."

Lord, thank You for Paul's example of enduring hardship for the gospel. Thank You that Your grace is always sufficient for me, and that Your strength is made perfect in my weakness. Help me to embrace my own infirmities, knowing that Your power can rest upon me. Teach me to trust You fully in all circumstances. In Jesus' name, Amen.
