💭 What This Means
Today's reading marks a pivotal moment, the transition from Jesus' earthly ministry to the birth of His Church. Mark and Luke briefly describe Jesus' ascension into heaven, where He sits at the right hand of God. Acts chapter one expands on this, showing Jesus instructing His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit. He assures them they will receive power to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. After His visible ascension, the apostles return to Jerusalem, and Matthias is chosen to replace Judas. Then, in Acts chapter two, the promised power arrives on the Day of Pentecost. A sound like a mighty wind fills the house, and tongues of fire rest on each of them. They are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin speaking in other languages, proclaiming God's wonders. Peter preaches a powerful sermon, explaining these events through prophecy and declaring Jesus as Lord and Christ. Three thousand people are convicted, repent, are baptized, and join the new community, devoted to teaching, fellowship, and prayer.
