💭 What This Means

Today's reading is a whirlwind of post-resurrection appearances, showing us how Jesus met his disciples in their confusion and doubt. We begin on the road to Emmaus, where two disciples are sad and bewildered. Jesus walks with them, opening the scriptures and making their hearts burn, though they don't recognize him until he breaks bread. Then, he appears to the gathered disciples, bringing peace, showing them his hands and feet, and even eating fish to prove he is real, not a ghost. Thomas, who doubted, gets to touch Jesus' wounds, declaring, 'My Lord and my God.' Later, by the Sea of Tiberias, Jesus restores Peter, commissioning him three times to 'feed my sheep.' Finally, Jesus gives his disciples the Great Commission, sending them out to make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching. He promises his constant presence and the Holy Spirit's power. Jesus continually opens their understanding to how all scripture points to him, to his suffering, and his glorious resurrection.

Lord, thank You for not leaving Your disciples in doubt, and for revealing Yourself to them after Your resurrection. Open my eyes and my heart to see You clearly in Your Word, just like You did for the Emmaus disciples. Help me to believe without seeing, and empower me with Your Spirit to share the good news with the world, just as You commanded. In Jesus' name, Amen.
