💭 What This Means

The readings today bring us to the cross, the central event of history. We see Simon of Cyrene compelled to carry the cross for Jesus, followed by weeping women to whom Jesus speaks of coming judgment. At Golgotha, the place of a skull, Jesus is crucified between two criminals. Soldiers cast lots for his clothes. Over his head is written, 'The King of the Jews,' a title mocked by passersby, chief priests, and even one of the criminals. They challenged him to save himself. But Jesus, in his agony, prayed 'Father, forgive them,' promised paradise to the repentant thief, and entrusted his mother to John. Then, darkness covered the land. Jesus cried out, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' and later, 'It is finished,' and 'Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.' With his last breath, the temple veil tore, and a centurion declared, 'Truly this man was the Son of God.' His side was pierced, fulfilling prophecy. This is the ultimate sacrifice.

Lord, today we stand at the foot of the cross, humbled by your love. Thank you for enduring such pain and mockery, for forgiving those who persecuted you, and for making a way for us to be with you in paradise. Help us to truly grasp the meaning of 'It is finished' and live in the freedom you bought for us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
