💭 What This Means

Today's reading brings us to the dramatic and unjust trial of Jesus before Pilate and Herod. Across all four Gospels, we see Pilate repeatedly declaring, "I find no fault in this man." Even when Jesus is sent to Herod, Herod finds nothing worthy of death and sends him back, after mocking him with a gorgeous robe. Pilate tries desperately to release Jesus, offering the crowd Barabbas, a murderer and insurgent, but they cry out for Jesus' crucifixion. Pilate's wife even warns him from a dream. Despite Pilate washing his hands and declaring his innocence, the crowd insists, taking the blood on themselves. The soldiers then mock Jesus, dressing him in a purple robe, a crown of thorns, and spitting on him, hailing him ironically as "King of the Jews." Jesus' powerful silence and his words to Pilate about his kingdom not being of this world, and Pilate's power coming from above, stand out amidst the chaos. In the end, Pilate yields to the crowd's will, delivering the innocent King to be crucified.

Lord, thank You for Jesus, the innocent King who endured such unjust trials and mockery. Thank You that He silently submitted to Your will, even when Pilate found no fault in Him. Help me to stand for truth, even when it's unpopular, and to trust Your sovereign plan in all things. In Jesus' name, Amen.
