💭 What This Means
Jesus continues His final teaching to His disciples, preparing them for His departure and what lies ahead. He warns them that the world will hate them, just as it hated Him. This isn't because of anything they've done wrong, but because they are "chosen out of the world" and belong to Him. He assures them that they will face tribulation, even persecution. But the good news is that His leaving is actually for their benefit, because it means the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, will come. The Spirit will guide them into all truth, convict the world, and glorify Jesus. This Spirit will empower them to bear witness. Finally, Jesus lifts His eyes to heaven and prays for His disciples, and for all future believers. He prays for their unity, their protection from evil in the world, and their sanctification by God's truth. He prays that they would be one, just as He and the Father are one, so the world might believe. He ends with a powerful promise that despite the tribulation, they can "be of good cheer," because He has "overcome the world."
🙏 Let's Pray
Lord, thank You for these powerful words of comfort and warning. Help me remember that if the world hates me, it first hated You. Thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to guide and empower me. Keep me from evil, sanctify me by Your truth, and help me live in the unity Jesus prayed for. May I have peace, knowing You have overcome the world. In Jesus' name, Amen.
