💭 What This Means

The flood rises, and then, after everything, it recedes. Noah steps onto dry ground and does something remarkable before anything else: he builds an altar. God responds with a promise that changes how humanity relates to Him from that point forward. Never again will He destroy the earth this way, and He puts a rainbow in the sky as the sign of it, not for Noah to remember, but for God Himself to remember. But Genesis doesn't let us stay in that high moment. Just verses later, Noah is drunk and his family is fractured by shame, a reminder that surviving God's judgment didn't make anyone perfect. Then, right where you'd expect the story to keep moving, it stops for names again. Sons of Japheth, sons of Ham, sons of Shem, echoed almost word for word in First Chronicles. Every nation you've ever heard of traces back to this one family in a boat.

Lord, thank You for the rainbow, a promise You made and keep even when we don't deserve it. Thank You that every person on earth is family under You. Help me see people that way today, not as strangers, but as family. In Jesus' name, Amen.
