💭 What This Means

Today's reading opens with Jesus giving the greatest commandment: to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. He tells a scribe he is "not far from the kingdom of God" for understanding this. Jesus then challenges His listeners to see that the Messiah is not merely David's son, but David's Lord. A powerful statement about His divine nature. But much of today focuses on Jesus' strong warnings against religious leaders. He condemns the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy, their love of public honor, and for laying heavy burdens on others while neglecting justice, mercy, and faith. He pronounces "woes" upon them for outwardly appearing righteous but being full of greed and iniquity. Finally, Jesus shows His disciples the poor widow who gives two small coins, observing that she gave more than the rich because she gave all she had, out of her poverty.

Lord, thank You for showing us the greatest commandment: to love You and our neighbor. Help me to live this out with all my heart, not just outwardly. Guard me from hypocrisy and teach me to give generously, like the widow, from a humble heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.
