💭 What This Means

Today's reading is a profound and challenging one. Jesus sits with his disciples on the Mount of Olives, looking at the magnificent temple, and tells them it will be utterly destroyed. Then, they ask about the signs of the end and his coming. Jesus warns them about deception, false prophets, and the increase of wars, famines, and earthquakes. He calls these the "beginning of sorrows." He also prepares them for intense persecution, betrayal by family, and being hated for his name's sake. But amidst these warnings, he gives them a promise: the Holy Spirit will speak through them, and the gospel will be preached to all nations. He describes his glorious return, after cosmic signs, when he will gather his elect. His words are clear: heaven and earth will pass away, but his words will never pass away. This gives us hope and a call to endure.

Lord, today's words remind us that this world is temporary, but your words are eternal. Help us to not be troubled by the signs of the times, but to trust in your sovereign plan. Give us courage to endure, to share the gospel, and to live faithfully until you return. We long for your coming, Lord Jesus. In Jesus' name, Amen.
