💭 What This Means

This reading plunges us into the intense final days of Jesus' public ministry. John reflects on the heartbreaking reality that many didn't believe in Jesus, even after witnessing His miracles, choosing the praise of men over God's. We then see Jesus' powerful actions, first cursing a barren fig tree, a vivid lesson about spiritual fruitlessness and the power of faith. Immediately after, He enters the Temple, cleansing it with righteous anger, declaring it a house of prayer that had become a "den of thieves." This bold act, along with His healing of the blind and lame and the children's praise, deeply angered the religious leaders. They confront Him, challenging His authority. Jesus, in His wisdom, turns their question back on them, asking about John the Baptist's authority. Their refusal to answer reveals their fear and their unwillingness to acknowledge the truth. Jesus then refuses to answer them, exposing their hypocrisy.
