💭 What This Means

Today's reading opens with the parable of the vineyard workers, showing us God's generous and surprising grace, where the last can be made equal to the first. Even as Jesus repeatedly foretells his suffering and death, his disciples, like James and John, are still focused on positions of power and glory in an earthly kingdom. Jesus corrects them, teaching that true greatness in his kingdom means becoming a servant to all, just as he, the Son of Man, came not to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many. We then see Jesus' compassion for the blind men who cry out for mercy, whose faith makes them whole, leading them to follow him. Finally, Jesus encounters Zacchaeus, a despised tax collector. Jesus seeks him out, bringing salvation to his home and declaring his mission: 'the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.' The parable of the pounds reminds us to faithfully use what God has entrusted to us.

Lord, thank You for Your generous grace, shown in the vineyard and in seeking out Zacchaeus. Forgive me when I seek my own glory instead of serving others. Help me to have a servant's heart, following Your example, and to faithfully use the gifts You have given me. May I join You in seeking and saving the lost. In Jesus' name, Amen.
