💭 What This Means
Today's reading presents a powerful contrast. Jesus begins by calling us to count the cost of following Him, urging us to put Him first, even above our closest relationships and our own lives. He wants us to be serious about discipleship, like building a tower or going to war. But then, He immediately pivots to parables that reveal God's incredible heart for the lost. The shepherd leaves ninety-nine to find one sheep, the woman searches diligently for a lost coin, and the father runs to embrace his prodigal son. There is immense joy in heaven over one sinner who repents. This section also warns us about the dangers of wealth and the eternal consequences of our choices, seen vividly in the rich man and Lazarus. Finally, in John's Gospel, we witness Jesus's profound love and power as He declares, "I am the resurrection and the life," and then raises Lazarus from the dead, offering a glimpse of the ultimate hope He brings.

Lord, thank You for showing us both the high cost of following You and the immeasurable joy You have when we turn to You. Help me to count the cost, to truly put You first in my life. And thank You that You are the resurrection and the life, overcoming death and bringing hope. Strengthen my faith today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
