💭 What This Means
Today's readings give us a powerful picture of Jesus as both the Good Shepherd and the Door to salvation. In John, Jesus explains that true shepherds enter by the door, and their sheep know and follow their voice. He declares, "I am the door," and "I am the good shepherd," emphasizing that He lays down His life for His sheep. He speaks of His intimate knowledge of His sheep and His unity with the Father, which provokes the Jews to try and stone Him for blasphemy. He also speaks of "other sheep" not yet in the fold, whom He must bring in. Then, in Luke, Jesus continues this theme of entry. He urges people to strive to enter the narrow gate, warning that many will seek to enter but won't be able once the door is shut. He challenges the Pharisees about healing on the Sabbath and teaches about humility at feasts. Finally, the parable of the Great Supper shows guests making excuses when called, leading the master to invite the poor, the maimed, and the blind instead. It's a stark reminder that while the invitation is open, we must choose to respond and enter.

Lord, thank You for being the Good Shepherd who knows my name and whose voice I can trust. Thank You for being the Door to abundant life. Help me to hear Your voice and follow You, striving to enter the narrow gate. Forgive me for the times I make excuses when You call. May I always accept Your gracious invitation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
