💭 What This Means

Today's reading opens with a desperate father whose son is suffering, and the disciples cannot help. Jesus calls out their unbelief, and the father cries, "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief." What an honest prayer. Jesus heals the boy, reminding them some battles require prayer and fasting. Amidst this, Jesus reiterates His coming death and resurrection, but the disciples still don't grasp it. Later, they argue about who is the greatest, and Jesus uses a child to teach radical humility, reminding them to receive "little ones" in His name. This leads to serious warnings against causing others to stumble, even to the point of cutting off anything that leads to sin. Finally, Jesus teaches about forgiveness, not just seven times, but seventy times seven, culminating in the parable of the unforgiving servant. This powerful story shows us that because we have been forgiven so much by God, we must forgive others from the heart.

Lord, I resonate with the father who cried, "Help my unbelief." Strengthen my faith, especially when I face impossible situations. Help me to humble myself like a child and to never cause others to stumble. Remind me daily of the immense forgiveness You have shown me, so that I can extend that same grace to others, forgiving them from the heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.
