💭 What This Means

Today's reading reveals Jesus challenging people to look deeper than the surface. In John's Gospel, the crowds seek him out after the miraculous feeding, but Jesus tells them they are looking for physical food, not the eternal life he offers. He declares, "I am the bread of life," explaining that his flesh and blood are true food and drink, providing everlasting life. This was a hard teaching, causing many of his disciples to turn away. Yet, Peter speaks for the twelve, affirming that Jesus alone has the words of eternal life. Then, in Mark and Matthew, Jesus confronts the religious leaders who are more concerned with outward traditions, like handwashing, than with God's actual commands. Jesus boldly states that what truly defiles a person comes from within, from the heart: evil thoughts, murder, and greed. Both passages call us to move beyond superficial concerns and embrace the spiritual truth of Jesus' identity and the condition of our hearts.

Lord, thank You for being the bread of life, the one who satisfies our deepest hunger. Help me to look beyond the temporary and the external, and to truly seek You and the eternal life You offer. Reveal the condition of my own heart and cleanse me from within. In Jesus' name, Amen.
