💭 What This Means

Today we see Jesus repeatedly challenging the religious leaders' understanding of the Sabbath. In John, he heals a man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years at the pool of Bethesda. This healing, done on the Sabbath, sparks fierce opposition. Jesus declares that just as his Father is always working, so is he, making himself equal with God and claiming the power to give life and judge. The other Gospels show his disciples plucking grain on the Sabbath, and Jesus defends them by reminding the Pharisees that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. He also heals a man with a withered hand in the synagogue, asking if it's lawful to do good or evil on the Sabbath. These encounters reveal the religious leaders' hardened hearts, as they prioritize rigid rules over mercy and life-giving acts. Jesus demonstrates his supreme authority, showing that he is indeed Lord even of the Sabbath.

Lord, thank You for showing us that You are the Lord of the Sabbath. Help me to understand that Your laws are for my good, and that mercy and love are always more important than rigid rules. Soften my heart when it becomes hardened, and help me to always seek to do good and bring life, just as You did. In Jesus' name, Amen.
