💭 What This Means

This day is packed with foundational teachings from Jesus. It starts with Jesus withdrawing from the crowds, going up a mountain, and spending an entire night in prayer before choosing his twelve apostles. This shows us the intentionality and divine guidance behind those He called to be with Him and to be sent out. Then we dive into what's often called the Sermon on the Mount, or on the Plain in Luke. Jesus begins by outlining the counterintuitive values of His kingdom. He declares blessings on the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, and those who hunger for righteousness. Luke also includes strong warnings, or woes, for the rich and complacent. Jesus then challenges His followers to be salt and light in the world, not to abolish the old law, but to fulfill it. He calls us to a righteousness that goes beyond outward actions, addressing the heart's anger, lust, and integrity, and most powerfully, to love our enemies and be merciful, just as God is. He also warns against doing good deeds to be seen by others.

Lord, thank You for choosing Your disciples and for giving us Your profound teachings today. Help me to truly understand and live out the Beatitudes, seeking to be poor in spirit, merciful, and a peacemaker. Give me the grace to love my enemies, to bless those who curse me, and to do good in secret, reflecting Your character to the world. In Jesus' name, Amen.
