💭 What This Means

This reading shows Jesus's power and purpose in several powerful encounters. We begin with the miraculous catch of fish, where Peter experiences Jesus's authority, recognizes his own sinfulness, and is called to be a "fisher of men." Then we see Jesus's compassion as he touches and heals a leper, an outcast, demonstrating his willingness to reach the untouchable. Next, a paralytic is lowered through a roof, and Jesus declares his sins forgiven, sparking controversy with the religious leaders. Jesus proves his authority to forgive by telling the man to walk, and he does. Jesus then calls Levi, a tax collector, to follow him, and boldly eats with "sinners," explaining that he came to call the sick, not the healthy, to repentance. Finally, he uses the parables of new cloth and new wine to show that his ministry represents a new way, a fresh movement from God that doesn't fit into old, rigid religious practices. Jesus is clearly initiating something profoundly new.

Lord, thank You for the new way You are making through Jesus. Thank You that He came to call sinners, not the righteous, and that He offers forgiveness and healing. Help me to respond to Your call with faith, just like Peter and Matthew, and to embrace the new things You are doing in my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
