💭 What This Means
Today we see two different leaders, Ezra and Nehemiah, both brokenhearted over the state of God's people. Ezra is devastated to learn that the Israelites have intermarried with surrounding nations, repeating the very sins that led to their exile. He tears his clothes, pulls his hair, and pours out a powerful prayer of confession, acknowledging their unworthiness but also God's persistent grace. The people respond with deep repentance, weeping and agreeing to a covenant to put away their foreign wives. Then we meet Nehemiah, far away in Susa, who also weeps and fasts upon hearing that Jerusalem's walls are broken down. He offers a profound prayer, confessing Israel's sins and reminding God of His covenant promises. Through bold, prayerful steps, Nehemiah secures the king's permission and resources to return and rebuild. He secretly inspects the ruined walls, then rallies the people, inspiring them to rise up and build, trusting in the good hand of God upon him despite opposition.

Lord, we see the deep sorrow of Ezra and Nehemiah over sin and brokenness. Thank You for their example of confession and courage. Help us to grieve over our own sins and the broken places in our world. Give us humble hearts to repent and the strength to obey Your call, trusting in Your good hand to guide us in every step of rebuilding. In Jesus' name, Amen.
