💭 What This Means
Today's reading shows us the incredible work of rebuilding Jerusalem's walls, piece by piece. Chapter three lists the many families, guilds, and individuals, even women, who diligently worked on their assigned sections, a powerful picture of collective effort. But this great work didn't happen without fierce opposition. In chapter four, we hear Sanballat and Tobiah mocking the Jews and conspiring to attack them. Nehemiah's response is a model for us: prayer to God and practical vigilance, with workers holding a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other. He reminds them, "Our God shall fight for us." Then in chapter five, an internal crisis emerges: some wealthy Jews were exploiting their poorer brethren. Nehemiah confronts this injustice head-on, rebuking the nobles and setting a personal example of selfless service. He calls for restoration, and the people agree. Chapter six brings more external plots, false accusations, and attempts to intimidate Nehemiah into sin, but he famously declares, "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down." The wall is finished in just fifty-two days, a testament to God's hand and faithful leadership, before Nehemiah appoints faithful leaders in chapter seven.

Lord, thank You for the example of Nehemiah and the people, who worked tirelessly despite internal and external opposition. Help me to remember that You fight for us, even when the work is hard or enemies try to distract. Give me courage to stand for what is right, and to keep my focus on the great work You have called me to do. In Jesus' name, Amen.
