💭 What This Means
Today we see the highs and lows of God's people returning to Jerusalem. In chapter four, we witness strong opposition. Enemies of Judah write a letter to King Artaxerxes, falsely accusing the Jews of rebellion and managing to halt the rebuilding of the city walls by royal decree and force. It's a reminder that God's work often faces resistance. But then, in chapter seven, God's 'good hand' is clearly on Ezra. A dedicated scribe, Ezra prepares his heart to seek, do, and teach God's law. Astonishingly, King Artaxerxes, a pagan ruler, is moved to not only allow Ezra to lead more exiles back to Jerusalem, but also to provide immense wealth for the temple and empower Ezra to enforce God's laws. Chapter eight details their journey. Ezra, trusting God's protection, proclaims a fast for safety rather than asking the king for soldiers. The Lord answers, delivering them from enemies and bringing them safely to Jerusalem with all the precious offerings.

Lord, we see Your mighty hand at work, even through kings and in the face of strong opposition. Thank You for empowering Ezra and for his trust in Your protection. Help us to prepare our hearts to seek and obey Your law, and to rely on Your good hand for our safety and provision, rather than on our own strength. In Jesus' name, Amen.
