💭 What This Means
Today we witness the passing of Jacob, the patriarch, as he insists on being buried in the promised land, a testament to his faith in God's covenant. Before he dies, he blesses Joseph's sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, intentionally crossing his hands to give the greater blessing to the younger, Ephraim. This echoes God's pattern of choosing the unexpected. Then, in a remarkable chapter, Jacob speaks prophetic words over each of his twelve sons, foretelling their futures. The blessing for Judah stands out, pointing to a kingly line and the coming of "Shiloh," a significant messianic prophecy. After Jacob's burial in Canaan, his sons fear Joseph's revenge, but Joseph reassures them with profound wisdom. He tells them, "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring about what is now happening, to save many lives." This powerful statement reveals God's sovereignty, turning human malice into divine purpose. The book closes with Joseph's death, but not before he too extracts a promise: that when God brings them back to the promised land, they will carry his bones with them. Even in death, their hope is fixed on God's future faithfulness.

Lord, thank You for showing us Your faithfulness through Jacob and Joseph. Even in death, they held onto Your promises for the future. Help me to trust, like Joseph, that even when others intend harm, You can always work all things for good. Strengthen my faith in Your sovereign plan. In Jesus' name, Amen.
