💭 What This Means
Amos, a simple shepherd, delivers God's fierce message. He begins by listing the sins of surrounding nations, declaring that God will bring judgment for their cruelty and broken covenants. But then, the hammer falls even harder on Judah and Israel. Because they knew God's law, their sin is even greater. God accuses them of despising His law, selling the righteous for silver, oppressing the poor, and engaging in idolatry. He reminds them of all the ways He tried to get their attention through famine, drought, blight, and pestilence, but each time, the refrain is the same: 'yet have ye not returned to me.' Their religious rituals mean nothing if their hearts are far from justice and righteousness. Amos warns them to 'seek the Lord, and ye shall live,' because a day of darkness is coming.
