💭 What This Means

Today's reading introduces us to two more kings of Judah, Amaziah and Uzziah. Both started out doing what was right in the Lord's sight, but both eventually failed significantly. Amaziah turned to idolatry and pride, leading to defeat and his own death. Uzziah became strong and prosperous, but then pride led him to overstep his bounds in the temple, and God struck him with leprosy. These stories remind us how easily even good intentions can be corrupted. Then we encounter the prophet Jonah. God calls him to preach to Nineveh, a great enemy city, but Jonah flees in the opposite direction. A storm, a great fish, and a dramatic prayer bring Jonah back to obedience. He preaches, and remarkably, Nineveh repents. But Jonah is angry at God's mercy, revealing his own narrow heart, which God gently, yet powerfully, confronts.

Lord, thank You for Your relentless mercy, even when we are slow to obey, or when we struggle to extend that mercy to others. Forgive us for our narrow hearts and our pride. Help us to trust in Your goodness and to align our desires with Yours, sharing Your compassion with all. In Jesus' name, Amen.
