💭 What This Means

Today we hear the prophet Amos deliver God's heavy message to a corrupt Israel. He sees visions of locusts and fire, but God relents when Amos intercedes. Then the vision of the plumbline comes, showing Israel is out of alignment, and judgment is now certain. Amos, a simple shepherd called by God, confronts a priest who tries to silence him. He condemns Israel's greed and injustice, warning of a devastating famine, not of food, but of God's word. This prophecy is tragically fulfilled in the chaotic reigns of Israel's kings we read about in Second Kings. Meanwhile, in Judah, the death of King Uzziah sets the stage for Isaiah's awe inspiring call. He sees the Lord on His throne, surrounded by seraphim crying, 'Holy, holy, holy!' Isaiah confesses his unclean lips, is purified, and immediately volunteers, 'Here am I; send me.' Even in the midst of harsh judgment, Amos ends with a promise of future restoration, and Isaiah carries a seed of hope.
