💭 What This Means

Today's reading shows us the continued struggle of both Israel and Judah with unfaithful kings and foreign oppression. Kings Jehoahaz and Joash of Israel persist in Jeroboam's sins, leading to Syrian dominance. Meanwhile, King Joash of Judah is also unfaithful and faces Syrian attack, ultimately dying by assassination. But a powerful moment occurs with the dying prophet Elisha. King Joash of Israel visits him, weeping. Elisha instructs the king to shoot an arrow of deliverance and then to strike the ground with arrows. The king strikes only three times. Elisha is frustrated, explaining that if Joash had struck five or six times, he would have completely defeated Syria. Instead, his victory will be limited. This highlights the cost of a lack of persistence or faith. Yet, even after Elisha's death, God's power is evident as a dead man revives upon touching Elisha's bones. And despite Israel's sin, God continues to show compassion because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Lord, thank You for Your enduring compassion and faithfulness to Your covenant, even when we are unfaithful. Forgive us when we hold back or lack persistence in pursuing Your will. Help us to fully embrace the opportunities You give us. Strengthen our faith to trust You completely. In Jesus' name, Amen.
