💭 What This Means

Today's reading opens with a shocking act of evil: Athaliah, the queen mother, attempts to wipe out the entire royal line of Judah. But God's promise to David would not be broken. Baby Joash is miraculously saved and hidden by his aunt Jehosheba and her husband, Jehoiada the priest. For six years, he is hidden in the temple. Then, Jehoiada bravely orchestrates a coup, revealing the rightful king. Athaliah is overthrown and executed, and Joash is crowned at just seven years old. Under Jehoiada's faithful guidance, King Joash does what is right, even initiating much-needed repairs for the temple, which had been neglected and plundered. However, the story takes a tragic turn. After Jehoiada dies, Joash abandons the Lord. He listens to wicked counselors and even orders the stoning of Zechariah, Jehoiada's own son, who dared to prophesy against him. This king, once saved and righteous, ultimately fell into ruin.

🙏 Let's Pray

Lord, thank You for Your unwavering faithfulness, even when evil seems to triumph. Thank You for saving Joash and raising him up. Help me to remember how easily a heart can turn away, even after a good start. Guide me to stay true to You, and to always listen to Your voice. In Jesus' name, Amen.
