💭 What This Means
Today's reading is a whirlwind of judgment, as God brings a dramatic end to the wicked house of Ahab. We begin with Jehoram, king of Judah, whose evil reign brings plague and foreign invasion, just as Elijah prophesied. He dies unmourned. His son, Ahaziah, continues the wicked ways, influenced by his mother Athaliah, who is a daughter of Ahab. Then, the prophet Elisha sends a young prophet to anoint Jehu as king over Israel, with a divine mandate to destroy Ahab's entire family. Jehu rides furiously, executing Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah. Jezebel is thrown from a window, fulfilling Elijah's prophecy. Jehu then systematically wipes out all of Ahab's seventy sons and other relatives, and even Ahaziah's kin from Judah. He gathers all Baal worshipers under false pretenses and slaughters them, cleansing Israel of Baal. Yet, despite his zeal, Jehu does not turn from the golden calves of Jeroboam.
🙏 Let's Pray
Lord, today's reading shows Your unwavering justice against wickedness and idolatry. Thank You for Your faithfulness to Your word, even when it means severe judgment. Help me to have a pure heart and to walk in Your ways completely, not just in part. Give me the courage to root out anything in my life that displeases You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
