💭 What This Means
Today's reading is filled with betrayals and sudden, violent deaths, as the kingdom transitions from Saul's house to David. We see Abner, Saul's general, turn against Ish-bosheth and pledge to bring all Israel to David, even returning David's wife Michal. But just as Abner secures peace with David, Joab, David's own general, murders Abner in cold blood to avenge his brother. David is heartbroken and publicly curses Joab, making it clear he had no part in this treachery. Then, Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, is murdered by two of his own captains, Rechab and Baanah, who bring his head to David expecting a reward. But David is outraged. He reminds them how he punished the man who falsely claimed to kill Saul, and now he executes these wicked men for killing a righteous man in his own home. David buries Ish-bosheth with honor, showing his commitment to justice and his refusal to tolerate such violence, even if it clears his path to the throne.

Lord, this reading shows us the brokenness of humanity, where ambition and vengeance lead to death. Thank You for David's example of justice and his refusal to embrace evil, even when it seemed to serve his purpose. Help me to always choose righteousness and integrity, no matter the cost.
