💭 What This Means

Today we see David's long-awaited kingship begin, but not without immediate conflict. The men of Judah anoint him king in Hebron, but Abner, Saul's general, makes Saul's son Ish-Bosheth king over the rest of Israel. What follows is a tragic civil war, starting with a deadly skirmish at the pool of Gibeon where Joab's brother Asahel is killed by Abner. This highlights the bitterness and division in the land. Then we shift to a powerful section about David's mighty men. These faithful warriors performed incredible feats of bravery, like the three who risked their lives to bring David water from Bethlehem's well, which he refused to drink, pouring it out to the Lord instead. Their loyalty, courage, and David's reverence for life, even in the midst of war, show us the kind of character that attracted such dedicated followers. Figures like Benaiah, with his legendary fights against lions and a giant Egyptian, exemplify the strength and devotion of those who stood with David.
