💭 What This Means

Today we see David at his lowest point and his highest character. Returning to Ziklag, he finds his city burned and his family taken captive. His own men want to stone him. But David 'encouraged himself in the Lord his God,' sought God's will, and miraculously recovered everything. He even established a just rule for sharing the spoil. Then, the news arrives that Saul and Jonathan are dead. David, despite all Saul's attempts on his life, mourns deeply for both the king and his beloved friend. He executes the Amalekite who claimed to kill Saul, showing respect for God's anointed. We also get a glimpse of Jonathan's son, Mephibosheth, a detail that will be important later. This day is full of grief and loss, but also God's faithfulness and David's unwavering trust, even in the darkest valleys.

Lord, thank You for the example of David, who encouraged himself in You even when everything was lost. Help me to turn to You in my distress and seek Your will. Give me a heart that mourns for others, even my enemies, and trusts in Your sovereign plan. In Jesus' name, Amen.
