💭 What This Means

David's journey as a fugitive takes him to the cave of Adullam, where he gathers a motley crew of four hundred men who are distressed, in debt, or discontented. These are the beginnings of his loyal army. The psalms for today, Psalms 57 and 142, give us a window into David's heart during this terrifying time. He cries out to God, pouring out his complaint and finding refuge under God's wings, even as his soul feels trapped among lions. We also see God raising up mighty warriors, like the Gadites in 1 Chronicles, who pledge their loyalty to David. But the day also brings a dark turn: Saul's paranoia leads him to brutally slaughter the priests of Nob and their entire city, all because of Doeg's malicious report. David takes responsibility, offering refuge to Abiathar, the lone survivor. Psalm 52 warns against such boastful mischief. Yet, even in extreme danger, David continues to seek God's guidance, inquiring of the Lord before acting.

Lord, thank You that You are our refuge, even when we feel overwhelmed and abandoned, like David in the cave. Help us to pour out our complaints to You and trust that You know our path. Protect us from those who boast in mischief, and give us the courage to seek Your guidance in every decision. In Jesus' name, Amen.
