💭 What This Means

Today's reading shows us David in the wilderness, relentlessly pursued by King Saul. Even amidst this danger, David's best friend Jonathan visits him, strengthening his hand in God and reaffirming God's promise that David will be king. When the Ziphites betray David, God intervenes by sending the Philistines to distract Saul, saving David from being captured. Then, in a powerful moment, David has the chance to kill Saul in a cave, but refuses to harm God's anointed king, trusting God to establish him. This act of mercy highlights David's heart. Later, after Samuel's death, David is again provoked by the foolish Nabal. David prepares to take vengeance, but Nabal's wise wife, Abigail, intercepts him, preventing David from shedding innocent blood. God then strikes Nabal, showing His justice and protecting David from his own anger. These stories reveal God's constant providence and David's growing character.

Lord, thank You for Your constant providence in David's life, and in ours. Thank You for protecting us, and for sometimes even protecting us from our own anger and desire for vengeance. Help us to trust Your timing and Your justice, and to show mercy even when we are wronged. In Jesus' name, Amen.
