💭 What This Means
Today's reading is a whirlwind of events, starting with tragedy. Israel is defeated, Eli's corrupt sons die, and the Ark of the Covenant is captured. Eli himself dies upon hearing the news, and his daughter-in-law names her dying son Ichabod, declaring that the glory has departed from Israel. But the story doesn't end there. The Philistines quickly learn that the Ark of God is not a trophy. As they move it from city to city, their idol Dagon falls before it, and plagues afflict them, forcing them to send it back with golden offerings. Even the Israelites who look into the Ark are struck down. For twenty years, the Ark remains in Kirjath-jearim. Then Samuel calls the people to repentance, they put away their idols, and God miraculously defeats the Philistines. Samuel sets up a stone, calling it Eben-ezer, 'Hitherto the Lord has helped us.' Yet, despite God's clear help, the people then demand a king, just like the other nations, rejecting God's direct rule over them.

Lord, today's story reminds us of Your power and holiness, and how easily we can stray. Help us to always remember that You are our true King, and that You are with us. Like Samuel's Eben-ezer, help us recall Your faithfulness in our past and trust You for our future. Keep us from rejecting Your good rule in our lives. In Jesus' name, Amen.
