💭 What This Means
Today, we witness the birth of Israel's monarchy, starting with the unlikely choice of Saul. He's introduced as a tall, handsome man simply looking for his father's lost donkeys. But God had a bigger plan. Samuel, guided by the Lord, anoints Saul in secret, giving him specific signs and promising that the Spirit of God would come upon him, turning him into another man. Saul is initially humble, even hiding when chosen by lot before the people. His first act as king is to rally Israel against the Ammonites, leading them to a decisive victory. This confirms his leadership, and the people renew the kingdom at Gilgal. Samuel then delivers a powerful farewell, reminding the people of God's past faithfulness and rebuking them for rejecting God by demanding a human king. As a sign, God sends thunder and rain during the dry harvest. Despite their sin, Samuel promises he will not stop praying for them and will continue to teach them the good way.

Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness, even when we make poor choices or ask for the wrong things. Thank You for providing leaders and for always being our true King. Help us to serve You with all our hearts, and to trust in Your unfailing love, just as Samuel taught. In Jesus' name, Amen.
