💭 What This Means
Today's reading continues with the division of the promised land among the tribes. We hear the lengthy and specific boundaries and cities given to Judah, then Ephraim, and then Manasseh. It is clear that God is fulfilling His promise to give them a home. But amidst these detailed lists, a recurring theme emerges: the tribes often failed to completely drive out the inhabitants. Judah could not drive out the Jebusites from Jerusalem. Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites from Gezer. Manasseh also struggled to fully possess their land. The chapter ends with the children of Joseph complaining they do not have enough land, despite being a great people. Joshua's response is powerful: "You are a great people, and have great power. You shall drive out the Canaanites, even though they have iron chariots and are strong." It is a call to trust God and act on the power He has given them.

Lord, thank You for fulfilling Your promises to Your people, giving them their inheritance. Forgive us for the times we fail to fully claim what You have given us, or hesitate because of challenges. Give us the faith and courage to drive out the "iron chariots" in our own lives, trusting in Your great power. In Jesus' name, Amen.
